There's a new name to add to the pantheon of the sons and daughters of Cain Dave Zeltserman. His new novel, Small Crimes, is ingeniously twisted and imbued with a glossy coating of black humor.

Crooked cop Joe Denton gets out of prison early after disfiguring the local district attorney, which doesn't help his popularity. Nobody wants Joe to hang around, not his ex-wife, his parents or his former colleagues.

Meanwhile, local mafia don Manny Vassey is dying of cancer and keen to cut a deal with God. He's thinking of singing to the DA if this will set him up for a better afterlife. And he knows stuff that will send Joe down again for a very long time.

Writers of noir don't often supply happy endings for their tales of the dark side of human nature. So it is here, with a corrupt cop finally getting out of jail, but finding his past catches up with him quickly. The title and theme show perfectly how a series of small, bad decisions lead one into a hell that is hard to escape from. The main character, Joe Denton, wants to do better, but at every turn is beset with ghosts of his past crimes. Trouble with his parents, his ex, his community, his criminal ex-partners, his former co-workers, all builds to mount a savage attack on his well-being. He manages a bit of an opportunistic romance, but even that has a darkness to it. A good lesson in paying attention to the choices one makes. This tough situation makes for a stellar read.

Small Crimes (Audible Audio Edition) Dave Zeltserman Joe Barrett Audible Studios Books Reviews

This book is extremely well written, fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable.
You can search inside to see for yourself. Joe Denton is a despicable
character who has gotten himself into a pickle. Some of favorite parts
were Joe's encounter with the DA's daughter, Clara and his involvement with
Charlotte Boyd. Enjoy the ride.
Dave Zeltserman is going places. NPR tagged this book as one of the top 5 novels of 2008, I couldn't agree more.

This book has everything a noir/pulp/mystery fan could ask for. I was hooked from start to finish. I felt guilty reading this book, it was so good.

I can't wait to read everything else by him.

What are you waiting for, get to reading!
SMALL CRIMES is a wonderfully complex and surprising look at a newly released convict's return to society. This is the first in Zeltserman's trilogy of novels about this subject. There are no missteps by Zeltserman, just by his protagonist. And it's just the beginning.
I review crime and mystery books for a few established websites, and in all the years I've been buying books (so many thousands and thousands of books) off , this might just be the first time I've ever been compelled to post a review (here at ). I read crime, mystery, noir, detective -- whatever you want to call it -- a lot. Constantly. About 95% of the books you read, even if you enjoy reading them, five books down the line you can't even remember what they were about. Then, every now and then someone new comes along like a Ken Bruen, or a Jo Nesbo, or a David Peace -- and just knocks you on your butt. I'm not only putting Dave Zeltserman ON my list of 10 or so "great" newish crime writers -- I'm putting him right up there near the top. He's one of those authors who, as soon as I finished his book, I immediately got ahold of everything else I could by him. I'm even trying to get an advanced reviewer copy of Killer, because I just can't wait.

And finally, here is the best thing I can say about this, or any, book -- I have literally purchased several (used) copies of "Small Crimes" to give away to people I respect. I just sent a copy to a guy who did me right on ebay. I even bought 2 copies for some of the other writers I work with -- who only read literary fiction. When I gave it to them, I said "read this, and you will understand every thing I love about crime fiction." And what higher praise can there be than that?

Dave Zeltserman rules. (Most) other crime writers drool.
Tightly written contemporary noir with a full complement of turns of the screw and twist of the knife. Nihilism on the half shell and nobody's a hero. You'll read it in a sitting.
Zeltserman is hands down an amazing writer. He accomplishes a fairly difficult feat by creating a protagonist you are both rooting for and at the same time are unsure weather or not to like.

The plot is engaging, a smart ex cop gets out of jail and we are given snippets of past history along with plot developments which push along the current scope of the novel. Together they mesh almost without hitting a wrong note.

I highly recommend this book. Dont want to give away any of the plot, or I would go into it more. Well worth reading.
An okay book that seems to hit all the right markers. The protagonist is remarkably unlikable despite being greatly sympathetic. The plot seems alright, with intensifiers sprinkled in to up the tension. The setting falls apart, as it could be any town the protagonist describes.

I'm not really sure where the novel falls apart for me. perhaps its the overwhelming averageness of everything. i kept expecting to be blown away but it consistently didn't happen. Along the way to the climax, the protag meets several interesting characters that he drags into his pile of crap with him. I can't help but feel sorry for them more than the main character.

The ending seems to suggest that he was a narcissist, and that he was better off dead and never having bothered the people, which is pretty bleak Selfishness is a running theme of the novel, with the character using many people. He uses alot of people to further his own ends. can't say i agree with the ending. it's surprising but very condemning.

I found myself thinking about this novel awhile after reading it, which is positive. but ultimately i felt this novel to be a little two dimensional and lacking in those details that pushes this towards greatness.
