I have no words to express the excitement about this book. All I can say is: more books like this one are needed! The topic is very interesting, broad and related to the present and the future, so more to write about it is what is needed. And there is a lot to write about.Product details

Modern AirLaunched Weapons Martin J Dougherty 9781435127029 Books Reviews
This is one of the better offerings which covers a very niche segment and obviously there has been a lot of effort to collate this subject together - unlike the dime a dozen military aircraft directories which are regularly churned out.
The last major works have been from Bill Gunston in 1983 modern Air Combat and the best of the lot in 1986 Aircraft Armament and one from Chris Chant again in the 80's and an affordable work other than the pricey Jane's was long overdue.
The author has divided this into 3 parts - a history of air to air weapons , second the loadout and configurations and a directory - a loadout is a particular combination of weapons and ammunition, employed for a specific mission and a potted directory of available weapons which includes air to air ; air to ground ; air to sea and rockets and bombs.
The challenge in this book is to depict the various configurations - the author has addressed this by showing a full rear view colour profile with wing loadings and then using computer graphics to remove the wings with the munitions suspended in mid-air to show the actual location . Bill Gunston in his novel 1983 Modern Air Combat addressed this by showing hige front view artworks with the wing configurations head-on which depicted this nicely and smaller side-on silhouettes as a supplement and this came out very nicely - however he had not addressed the various attack configurations which this book addresses and neither had he covered bombers and air naval attack variants but he had given almost a half page in development history of the major weapons.
Some key points - excellent full page rear side original loading artworks , good appreciation of tactics to address various mission profiles and technologies (could have done with some more tactical diagrams ) - most of the major combat aircraft are covered around 20 including the B-2 , F-22 , F-35 and the Flanker series ( the Mirage 2000 and the SU-34 got missed out) - but generally the coverage has been excellent.
The only negative point is that the author has tried to address novice readers as well - hence the development history of aircraft is covered rather than the development history of the actual weapons concerned - which is where Jane's scores over this book.
The directory section is representative only (possibly due to size issues) could have been a bit more comprehensive (mostly covers the key US and Russian ones) and felt with another 10 pages would have included some key weapons like the Israeli Derby and some Chinese types which are missed but i was pleased to see the inclusion from Inida and south africa ex of the supersonic Brahmos and Darter.
Despite a few shortcomings i would say this is a serious work and quite a refreshing change for the serious enthusiast - defintely worth buying and very affordable for its large size would well have been double the price if published by Midland .
I have no words to express the excitement about this book. All I can say is more books like this one are needed! The topic is very interesting, broad and related to the present and the future, so more to write about it is what is needed. And there is a lot to write about.
