It was the book equivalent to sriracha sauce for me. I don't like any of the ingredients, but I can't seem to eat a meal without it. This book had a significant age gap, the heroine sleeps with someone else at the beginning of the book, neither characters are very likable, the hero is cold, and they enter into a morally reprehensible contract. The list goes on and on as to why I shouldn't like this book, but I did. I couldn't put it down. It takes a talented writer to take two characters with so many flaws, put them into a seemingly distasteful situation and have them coming up smelling like roses. The book takes you to the brink of not liking them before sucking you back in over and over. It sets itself apart from other many other books with dueling emotionally stunted main characters. Those books always seem to maintain a depressed mood throughout until the very end. These two argue a lot and they argue viciously, but what they don't do is hold grudges or carry on the argument past the point of ridiculousness like others I've read. The arguments are entertaining, but they don't overwhelm and the peaceful times make you want them to decide it's all worth it.

Unsticky Sarra Manning 9780755347377 Books Reviews

Loved the length of the book! There are so many short reads out there today that make me feel cheated. I liked the plot of the book, but felt that Vaughn's character needed to be more developed. I really wanted to know how he was feeling for Grace. The ending was very blunt and left me wanting more. Also, Grace was a complete idiot for not being there for her BEST friend's wedding.
I bought this one because it came from a recommendation list of stories to read after the Fifty Shades series. Set in London, the characters both seem a little stilted at first but Ms. Manning gently coaxes us along until we find ourselves entwined in the world of Vaughn and Grace, two people who find their way to each other because they finally realize that they are better together than apart. Not nearly as steamy as Fifty Shades but I did enjoy it. I would recommend it.
Loved the story , loved the characters, loved how Ms. Manning took the time to create a wonderful story and develop such a likeable heroin "Grace". She was goofy, whacky, funny and charming. The hero, if we want to call him that, was self centered, arrogant and manipulative. The things he would say and do to Grace really ticked me off. But the chemistry between them was great! This but was a bit long, but I'm glad Ms.Manning didn't string us along with a trilogy. I recommend this book.
This book tore my heart out. All through the book I waited for some relief, for the pressure on my chest to relent, but it didn't. Sarra Manning certainly has a flair for writing about unloved and abandoned people, living their lives hidden in big cities. One gets the feeling that the metropolises of the world are peopled with many many such individuals, each with their own disheartening story. In Unsticky, 23-year-old fashion magazine general dogsbody Grace, after getting dumped by her so-called boyfriend at a luxury department store, agrees to become the mistress/business manager of 41-year-old insanely wealthy art dealer Vaughn. She expects to be able to pay off her credit card debts, but it turns out that being a high-class prostitute is not that lucrative actually, not to mention the emotional abuse and exploitation. Funnily, I kept thinking 'child labour'.

Unlike some other reviewers, I think the two main characters are more than 'flawed'. We get to know Grace a lot better than Vaughn, so it is perhaps no wonder I started to have motherly feelings towards her and was completely devastated that she bumped into this Vaughn character. I hoped for a while that she would leave him/hand in her notice, but she never really did. Vaughn called the shots while she was rather passive, letting other people use her. Which was, by the way, realistic and her character was well-written - heartrendingly so. Grace had so much going for her but she never received any nurturing love while growing up. I think the fact that Vaughn was almost 20 years older made it even more palpable as he was in some sort of parental situation, an adult who should know better.

The theme that stood out most to me is the responsibility of adults to nurture the young and in how many ways today's young people have been let down by their elders. Grace working hard at a job that is not enough for food and shelter is contrasted with her 'spoiled rich girl' best friend Elizabeth; Grace facilitating million-pound deals for Vaughn and getting a measly amount of the earnings while Vaughn also callously uses her body and at one point forces her to work while she has high temperature reminded me of the terrible working conditions, child labour and sweatshops, the exploitation of the young, poor and defenseless by the unfeeling and detached rich.

This is not a romantic story to me, although it probably has what can be construed as a happy ending. All considered, I realised by the end of the story that Vaughn actually had done more for Grace than anybody else in Grace's life - he did pay off her debts when he found out about them. Still, I found the ending somewhat lacking. I didn't feel Grace got sufficiently empowered but it's difficult to say.

All in all, an intelligent, nuanced portrayal of social inequalities in our times, a modern version of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South or Emile Zola's The Ladies' Delight.
The title of my review, sums up my feelings about this book. In the sense that these two characters became almost real people to me, because they were so imperfect. Its really a sweet book about a not so likeable hero and sometime silly and irresponsible heroine. And of course the fashion which I loved was included and described in this book. There was a lot left to the imagination of the reader, and the story was skillfully woven with moments of high-drama and other of almost peace with something dramatic lurking around the corner. I don't know any millionaire art-dealers but i think the characters and personalities were the most real I have ever read. The reason i did not give this book all 5 stars is because of the end, it is abrupt, although i do agree with other reviewers that Grace was finally taking action at the end, the wording itself was abrupt and it gave a very polished book and unpolished ending.
What I didn't like was the rather slow start. What I liked was the quirky personalities of the main characters. Especially how the female lead character had difficulty setting boundaries with coworkers, female friends, and boyfriends-often doing things she didn't want to do to be "nice" and avoid confrontations. I liked how her character developed and how she found her voice.
I also loved the character of the male lead, Vaughn. Often successful men can be arrogant bullies, and he was. Yet the author made him likable. Loving a difficult man is a great theme, because many good men are!
