Game of Secrets A Novel Dawn Tripp 9781400061884 Books

Game of Secrets is a demanding and rewarding game for the reader. Built around the metaphor of a game of Scrabble, the novel uses interstitial interludes of piecing, fitting, and scoring words from the placement of letters as a descriptor for the difficult challenges that we all face in piecing together the impact of family and past on who we become and our capacities to embrace life.

Set with a marvelous particularity in a small New England fishing town, the novel draws fine portraits of two families and three generations linked by the unrelenting proximity of small town life, ancient adultery, a mysterious murder, and the painful quest for love. So it falls to the next generation, and the next, to play the game, seek the secrets, and hope for a redemption that may be understanding at long last or at long last the richness of love.

The novel has a wonderful, satisfying ending, but I can't say anything more about that. I recommend reading Game of Secrets. It's a winner.

Game of Secrets A Novel Dawn Tripp 9781400061884 Books Reviews

I did not like ths book at all. I thought it was more aof a mystery novel and include many referrences in the review to Scrabble, which is a game I enjoy. I found the book hard to follow, and had lttile to do with the Game of Scrabble or how the game affected the book or the charcters in the book
I didn't enjoy reading this book. It is full of language I don't enjoy reading, jumped back and forth in time in a way that was confusing, and it was hard to like any of the characters.
Great book.
I absolutely loved this novel for three main reasons This is a very talented, descriptive writer that has a way with words. I dont know how else to say it, but I will definitely read more of her work; the back and forth between the past and present became a little hard to follow at times, and the author could have transitioned this a little smoother, but she still kept the integrity of the plot; I loved the way she told the story against the background of a scrabble game which added another layer of intrigue.
This book sounded great so I recommended it to the book club. However, some could not get through it because they could not connect with the characters and because they found the plot confusing. I read it two months ago and cannot remember much of the plot, so that should tell you something. The storyline involved game of Scrabble which intrigued me, but the playing did not start as soon as I would have liked. Another reader said it was possible to figure out who committed the murder if you kept track of all the Scrabble clues............the members of the book club tried to, but could not make enough sense out of them. It was a great idea, but not what I expected. I felt bad that so many of them spent $ on the book instead of using the town library.
Love the work of Dawn Tripp. It is almost like poetry in its use of language. But, my favorite is still "Moontide".
Finest kind and mighty tasty is my sophisticated summing up of this sparely sumptuous novel. I've never been to that part of the country but I'm not ignorant of what it must be like so evocative and distinct is the place and time Tripp chronicles. Also, the story is really (that's a technical literary modifier) good, as is the back tracking and linking of past to present and back again. It's wonderful reading and remarkable for the way words and games (Scrabble, anyone?) knit up the strands of confession, intimacy, passion and place into a coherent whole.

Loved this book.
