In the End Quarantined Volume 2 Tracey Ward 9781494908119 Books

Okay, this was the first zombie book/series I've read and never thought I would read this kind of book but I took a chance because I do like post-apocalyptic books (and apparently really bad run-on sentences too, so I will take a breath here). I cannot express just how much I LOVE these books! I've read them both 3 times now and still love them! 2 of the best characters I've ever read. Ms. Ward could use these same characters in any series and it would be a success because they were so brilliantly written. It wasn't just them though. The world was so well thought out and perfectly executed. It is exactly how I could see things playing out in a real (ha!) Zombie apocalypse. The decisions they make, how they react to situations, their growth...everything. when I told my sister-in-law that she just HAD to read this series about "a mentally unstable girl and young guy surviving a zombie outbreak" she looked at me like I was crazy but she trusted me and read it and we haven't stopped talking about the amazingness that is these books since. Thank you Ms. Ward for sharing Ali and Jordan's story with us! Almost 400 books that I've reviewed and these are 2 of only 9 books so far I've given a 5 star rating for.

In the End Quarantined Volume 2 Tracey Ward 9781494908119 Books Reviews

I love all of Ward's survival novels, and I've finally finished the last one I needed to read. Of course, I read them all out of order, lol. But each book brought me closer to a love of the main characters, an appreciation for Ward's writing style, and a love for zombie culture, which in reality scares the coral out of me! Thanks Tracey for reminding me that the zombie apocalypse isn't about zombies, it's about people. Love your novels!!
I REALLY LOVE dystopians that feature zombies. I mean, seriously. Can it get any better?
Not only are there undead creature trying to eat the characters' faces off but you also--for the most part--have crazy humans who are trying to kill them, as well. It makes for some crazy suspense.
After reading Until the End, I started this book. Immediately. It was one of those two-in-the-morning-need-to-get-my-fix moments. More than anything I wanted Jordan, Alli to find a place to be safe. A place where they could live the rest of their lives without running.
But, the more I read, the more I realized that this story is so much more complex than that. There are other characters that I grew to care about.

As far as the romance aspect of In the End, there was just enough to keep me happy. It wasn't too sappy and diluted with corny love scenes. However, there was enough that I knew that Jordan and Alli cared about each other.
One part, in particular, made me swoony. When you get to Jordan adding his and Alli's name to the Living List. That. Made my heart swell. So sweet.

Although we see some of the characters featured in this book, in Ms. Ward's spin-off Survival Series, this story comes to a satisfactory conclusion. It leaves you wondering what happened to the characters that survived. But, there's enough of a finish that it's not a cliffhanger.
Book Two picks the story of Jason and Ali from the time the couple link up with Ali's dad, Syd. This stanza tells the yarn from Jason's POV and concludes with a have-to-read-it-twice epilogue.

Book Two differs from its precursor in a number of ways. My take thus
1. Ms Ward does a credible job of stepping into a young guy's shoes but she doesn't quite capture the seasoned nuances of what young men think, feel and do - both in relation to women or the world at large. It's nothing too problematic but its anomalies pop up from time to time.
2. The young couple are now openly in love with one another and this changes the premise-dynamic. However the way they express their devotion is strangely muted and often oddly distant from one another. In Book One their growing attraction was the high point of the work, but in Book Two it's less vividly portrayed. Their loving verbal interactions for example are relatively muted. (Okay I get the idea that the presence of Grumpy Dad Syd puts a damper on it but they managed to express themselves beautifully and sensitively in Book One when zombies were everywhere....)
3. Ali's mental illness, a key element of Book One, is also de-emphasized here. It's there but viewed at a remove from Jason's POV - so I can see what the author was doing.
4. Jason's character stands center stage and Ali's becomes a support cast player. As mentioned above, he doesn't quite ring true at times but for the most part comes across as an intelligent, quick-witted and tolerant chap who can hold his own against those who try to put him down and take advantage. His expressions of devotion to Ali are restrained and at all times sensitive. Romantics will applaud and approve.
5. Syd is an odd character. I struggled to understand his unbroken antipathy towards Jason even when it's plainly apparent his intentions for Ali are entirely honorable. In any future rewrite, I'd suggest taking a fresh look at the way this guy is presented. It jars...yes it does.
6. Ending a zompoc novel is always fraught. Many of them fail dismally. ITE does so in an entirely satisfactory way although I had to read it twice to ensure I'd "got it".

What's To Like?
1. A wonderful romantic story which you simply must read if you've invested in Book One.
2. Dialog is very good indeed. It doesn't reach great heights of rhetoric but it's more than fit for purpose.
3. Scene descriptions are very good and evocative.
4. Jason's thought processes as written are excellent. His pain experiences were outstandingly well crafted.
5. A neat wrap-up at a technical level.
6. The overall story arc is properly put together with no plot holes. Excellent.

One Star Off Then?
1. Five stars means a near Perfect/Outstanding book...let's be clear on that point.
2. Jason as Young Man. Doesn't quite carry it off. (Book One - Ali's POV was superb by any standard.)
3. Syd's character needed a cut and polish. He had only one chance to shine when he and Jason had a fireside chat.
4. Minor typos uncaught at the editorial stage. Nothing serious or distracting though.

Overall
1. Doesn't hit the high bar set by Book One (A superb read.)
2. Tells the story and sticks to the script.
3. A romance first, a zompoc second. And it's all the better for it.

Should you buy this this book? Unquestionably yes...particularly if you've already read and fallen in love with Book One. Together they're a delightful and refreshing experience and my carping shouldn't put you off approaching Book Two with a suitably open mind...okay? P
